Naturopathic care at Priority One Osteo and Wellness is with Dr. Ryan Milan, a naturopathic doctor registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Most people come to him with something that’s been going on for a while: hormones that feel off in their 40s or 50s, blood pressure or blood sugar their family doctor is watching, fatigue, or weight that won’t move no matter what they try.

His job is to find out why, and then build a plan you can actually follow. That usually means changes to food, sleep, stress and movement first, with supplements, herbal medicine or acupuncture added where they make sense.

Who Dr. Ryan Milan is

Dr. Ryan studied at Western University, where he completed an Honour Specialization BMSc and an MSc in Physiology and Pharmacology. His graduate research compared surgical approaches to knee replacement in men and women with osteoarthritis, as part of the Joint and Motion Program funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He’s a member of the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors and the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors.

That research background shows up in how he works. If you have recent bloodwork, he’ll go through the numbers with you and explain what he’s seeing in plain language. You can read more on Dr. Ryan Milan’s profile.

What he focuses on

Dr. Ryan’s practice centres on mid-life health. These are the areas he sees most often:

  • Women’s hormonal health, perimenopause and menopause. Irregular cycles, hot flashes, poor sleep, mood changes. He has dedicated 60 and 90 minute appointments for these.
  • Men’s hormone health and andropause. Low energy, weight gain around the middle, lower drive.
  • Heart and metabolic health. Blood pressure, cholesterol, circulation and blood sugar, usually alongside the care you already get from your family doctor, not instead of it.
  • Weight that won’t shift. He looks at sleep, stress hormones, blood sugar and digestion. Calories are only one piece of it.
  • Ongoing pain. Short 30-minute treatment sessions, which can include acupuncture or cupping.

If what you’re dealing with isn’t on this list, call us at 905-808-9231 before booking and we’ll tell you honestly whether Dr. Ryan is the right fit or someone else on the team is.

Your first visit

The initial visit is 60 minutes ($180). Plan to talk through your health history, current medications and supplements, diet, sleep and stress. Bring any recent lab results you have; it saves time and sometimes saves you a repeat test.

By the end you’ll leave with a first set of recommendations and a sense of what the next few weeks look like. Follow-up visits are 30 minutes ($95) or 60 minutes ($180), depending on how much there is to review. Most people come back within a few weeks so Dr. Ryan can see what’s working and adjust.

Initial and follow-up visits are also available virtually, if coming in to Brant Street isn’t easy for you.

Naturopathic care works alongside medical care. If you’re on prescription medication, bring the list: Dr. Ryan checks any supplement or herb against what you already take before recommending it.

Full prices for every naturopathic service are on our pricing page.

Acupuncture and cupping

Acupuncture and cupping are both available with Dr. Ryan, either on their own (30 or 60 minutes) or as part of a treatment plan. People most often book them for muscle and joint pain, tension and stress. Needles are fine and single-use, and most people feel little more than a brief pinch.

Is naturopathy covered by insurance?

Often, yes. Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario include naturopathic care, usually as a yearly dollar amount per person. Because Dr. Ryan is registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, you’ll get a receipt you can submit for reimbursement. We don’t bill insurers directly, so you pay at your visit and send the receipt to your provider.

Coverage varies a lot between plans, so check two things with your provider before your first visit: how much you have per year for naturopathy, and whether acupuncture is covered under the same amount or separately.

Many people don’t realize they have this coverage until they look. If yours resets in January, the last few months of the year are a good time to use it.

Care under one roof

Dr. Ryan is one of more than a dozen practitioners at our clinic on Brant Street. If your plan would benefit from hands-on work, he can refer you down the hall to registered massage therapy or manual osteopathy. If you’d like more day-to-day support with meals and food habits, our holistic nutrition service is a good complement.

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a naturopath?
No. You can book directly. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor’s referral before they’ll reimburse, so it’s worth checking yours.

Is a naturopathic doctor a medical doctor?
No. Naturopathic doctors in Ontario complete a four-year naturopathic program after university and are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. They don’t replace your family doctor, and Dr. Ryan’s care is meant to work alongside yours.

How many visits will I need?
It depends on what you’re working on. Most plans start with an initial visit and two or three follow-ups over the first couple of months, then spread out from there.

Can I see Dr. Ryan online?
Yes. Both the initial visit and follow-ups can be done virtually.
