Chiropractic Care and Your Nervous System

Your nervous system runs everything you do without thinking about it: how you move, how you feel pain, how you hold your posture, how your body settles after a stressful day. When the joints of your spine move stiffly or you’re carrying tension in your neck and back, that system has to work harder. Chiropractic care can’t switch stress off, but for many people it helps the spine move more freely, which is associated with less pain and easier day-to-day function.

At Priority One Osteo and Wellness in Burlington, chiropractic care is one part of a whole-person approach. Dr. Alexis Anderson works alongside our osteopaths, massage therapists and naturopathic doctor, so your care fits what your body actually needs rather than a single technique applied to everyone.

What your nervous system does every day

It’s easy to think of the nervous system as something abstract. In practice, it’s doing concrete work all the time:

  • Coordinating muscle movement and balance
  • Carrying pain signals, including the ones that tell you to stop
  • Holding your posture upright without conscious effort
  • Helping your body shift out of a stress response and back to rest

When you’re in pain or your movement is restricted, your body compensates. You brace, you favour one side, you move less. Over weeks and months that compensation can turn into stiffness, recurring aches, and a shorter fuse for physical stress. People often describe it as feeling “wound up” in the body.

Common patterns we hear about at the clinic include ongoing neck or back pain, tension headaches, tightness that doesn’t ease with rest, and a general sense of stiffness that builds through the week.

How chiropractic care relates to your nervous system

Chiropractic care focuses on how the joints of your spine move. When a joint is stiff or irritated, the surrounding muscles tighten and the area becomes sensitive. That local irritation is uncomfortable on its own, and it can make you guard the area and move less.

Gentle chiropractic adjustments aim to restore easier movement in those joints. For many people that’s associated with less local pain, looser muscles, and more comfortable movement. It’s a musculoskeletal approach with a real effect on how comfortable you feel, and it isn’t a treatment for disease or a replacement for medical care.

What it looks like in a session:

  • A history and physical assessment of your spine, posture and movement
  • Hands-on adjustments and soft-tissue work suited to your comfort level
  • Guidance on posture, movement and simple things you can do between visits
  • A plan with a clear purpose, not open-ended standing appointments

What care looks like with Dr. Alexis

Dr. Alexis Anderson is a Doctor of Chiropractic registered with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO), with 11 years in practice. Her focus is movement and rehabilitation rather than adjustments alone. She’s Full Body Active Release Technique (ART) certified, Rocktape FMT Movement Specialist certified, trained in dry needling (Myopains DN1), and certified in cupping and IASTM. She also holds pre and postnatal coaching certification through BIRTHFIT.

In practice that means an appointment with her tends to include an actual look at how you move, soft-tissue work on the muscles around the stiff joint, and specific things to practise at home so the change holds. If you’re an athlete or you train regularly, that rehabilitation focus is part of why patients come to her. You can read more on her profile or book directly on her team page.

When chiropractic is one piece, not the whole answer

Priority One is a wellness hub, not a single-service clinic, and we’re honest about where chiropractic fits.

If your main issue is a longstanding pattern of back or neck pain, our osteopaths take a broader structural view of the whole body. Our manual osteopathy pages for back pain and neck pain explain that approach, and there’s a page on how osteopathy may help with headaches. If muscle tension is the bigger part of the picture, registered massage therapy may be the better starting point, and it pairs well with chiropractic care.

Not sure which one you need? Our guide to osteopathy, physiotherapy and chiropractic walks through the differences in plain language. And if something in your symptoms points to a medical cause, we’ll say so and recommend you see your physician first.

Who tends to benefit

Chiropractic care for musculoskeletal comfort is worth considering if you:

  • Sit at a desk most of the day or do physically demanding work
  • Train regularly and want to move well and recover between sessions
  • Deal with recurring neck, back or shoulder tension
  • Want to improve how you move rather than wait for the next flare-up

You don’t need to be in severe pain to book. Many people come in to address stiffness before it turns into something that limits them.

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic care safe?

For most people, chiropractic care for musculoskeletal complaints is a low-risk, non-invasive option when it’s provided by a registered chiropractor. Dr. Alexis will review your history first and adjust her approach to your comfort. If anything in your assessment suggests you should see a physician first, she’ll tell you.

How often will I need to come in?

It depends on what’s going on and how you respond. Many people start with a short series of closer-together visits, then move to occasional maintenance or stop altogether once things settle. You should always leave with a clear reason for the next appointment.

Can chiropractic care help with headaches?

It may help with tension-type headaches that are linked to neck stiffness, though results vary from person to person. Our headache page covers this in more detail, including the signs that mean you should see a doctor.

Will one adjustment fix everything?

No. Chiropractic care usually works gradually, alongside changes to how you move and work. Anyone promising a single-visit fix is overselling it.
